The concept of Online Games.
As what the topic says, i want to share my view point regarding MMORPGs.
I would just assume you guys know about it, so i won't go into explaining MMORPGS.
But basically, MMORPGs are popular because of the interaction between players in the net as shown in the massively multi player.
Game companies of such games, uses this special characteristic to "rob" money out of players. How does it go? I shall just use simple words to explain first.
1. Game is launched into Open Beta Phase.
2. Server is opened, and new players join in. Assume as Player A and Player B are friends.
3. Player A and B chose the same class in the game, and trained together, looking for ways to build up their character for PVP.
4. Both of them reached high levels, due to new game play, but however, leveling spots at higher levels seems to be lacking.
5. Special items are popular, which allow access to harder areas. Thus they farmed for money and bought them. And they leveled faster there and reached higher levels.
6. However, experience gain was seriously too slow, and the game has released cash shop, which has items to boost their exp rates. They bought it of course, they wanted to be powerful PVPers anyway.
7. More players bought the items, and better items are sold in the cash shop, which allows for even high exp growth. They bought them again, and thought that they would own the others.
8. Guilds and guild wars soon came, they set up a guild and became one of the prestigious guilds in the game.
9. Thus, they have to lead the guild to wars, and gain the fame. And thus they continue playing and buying cash shop items to maintain their exp growth rate, as they PVP during wars and during free times.
Basically, this is what the player A and B did. But how much money did the company earn? I'm sure it's not just them, there are tons of others too.
My own explanation.
New MMORPGs, are usually welcomed because of the new surroundings and new game play, thus it attracts a lot of new players, and potential 'money givers'. After players reach higher levels, leveling seems to have a little bit of problem, special items come into game play, allowing players to use them to enter special locations. These special items usually get increase in market price in game overtime.
As those special and rare items increase in price, cash shop comes up. To allow players to get higher exp gains and also drop rates. And from Cash -> buying of special items, allowing players to get powerful. When players start buying, they wouldn't stop. And experienced players would play further more, reaching higher levels using the support of the cash shop.
As the game goes on, Guilds and Wars and created, allowing players to PVP each other in a wide open environment. This shall enhance the effect of the cash shop. Due to this, it keep looping, and new patches are released, to allow of buying of rarer and much better items from the cash shop. Allowing players who bought them to have the unfair advantage. And this is what that happens.
When players wake from their MMORPG's addiction, they find that they had lost a lot of money on something that is not even useful. But in the end it was too late, no matter how they would regret, because time will never come back. For me, i would classify them as "tricked".
* This is not a post for my assignment or anything. This is just merely a viewpoint of games, specifically online games. And how i feel about them. If I do offend you in any part of my post, i hereby say sorry. But my viewpoint will stay the same.
